Origin And History

Pilani is acknowledged worldwide as the ‘City of Education and a Centre of excellence’ in the field of education. Birla School, Pilani widely known as BIRLA HIGH SCHOOL is not only the oldest but also the premier and pioneer educational institution of Pilani. The metamorphosis of the School is very interesting. The small seedling the ‘Pathshala’, the predecessor of Birla School Pilani planted by Seth Shiv Narayan Ji Birla in 1901 for the education of his grandsons Shri G.D.Birla and Shri R.D. Birla has grown into a mighty banyan tree with numerous branches (educational institutions). For over two decades the ‘Pathshala’ remained as a primary school and then was raised to a Middle School in 1922 and the first batch appeared at the middle School in 1924. It was a turning point. After a period of lull, the tremendous growth of the institution started. The school was recognized as a High School by the U. P. Board of Education in 1925 and as an intermediate college in 1929. In July, 1958 the school was raised to the status of a ‘Multipurpose Higher Secondary School’. The School adopted 10+2 pattern of education in 1975-76 in its 9th class and the first batch was introduced at the All India Secondary School Examination, CBSE in March, 1977. The ‘plus two stage’ (Senior Secondary) under the new pattern was introduced the same year and the first batch under the system passed out in 1979. Since then the school has been producing excellent results with overwhelming first divisions and ‘A’ grades. The school is managed and run by the famous and resourceful Birla Education Trust, Pilani, established in 1929. It has already celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1951, the Diamond Jubilee in 1961 and the Platinum Jubilee in 1976 and its Centenary in 2001. Eminent illustrious personalities like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, C. Rajagopalachari, Chief Justice, bureaucrats and many more such galaxy of personalities have participated in its functions directly or through warm messages and greetings.

The 119th Prize Giving Function and Annual Day of the school, has already been celebrated in a grandiose way with all its unvarying features like out-door callisthenic display, science, art, craft and mathematics exhibitions, working models and stage showcases. Pilani has assumed a cosmopolitan character because of the Birla Educational Institutions with due emphasis on achieving the highest and noblest ideals of education. The school and hostel presents a true picture of microcosm of our pluralistic society with heterogeneous character. Students from all over the country harmoniously board in the school hostel in the true spirit of camaraderie. The main thrust of the school is on academics, however, equal importance and ample opportunities for extracurricular activities are also given. NCC (all the three wings), Band, Judo-Karate, Art, Music, SUPW, etc. You name the activities and the school offers them, like the regular games and PT, Swimming, State of the Art Multi-gym, Equestrian and Skating are all regular features of the school activities. Moreover, special arrangements have been made to avail the services of Sports Authority of India (SAI) Coaches to provide intensive qualitative and specialized coaching to the budding sportsmen. Its fields have produced the sportsman of national repute.
